This week it has been leaked that German car giants, Volkswagen, have patented designs for an SUV, MPV, luxury saloon and sports car to add to its EV range. posting the patented images on the World Intellectual Property Organisation website, the car brand are making many efforts to dominate the zero-emissions market, a space in the industry that all manufacturers are competing to lord.
Promising the future in electric sports car and minibus design, VW are working with the urban carrier-type look, one made famous by the VW electric concept Budd-e. Launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January the concept marked the direction the brand was going in, gaining critical acclaim and flying the flag high for the electric car.
Showcasing some exaggerated aerodynamic features, the sportier models of the range are incredibly impressive, with the image showing an extendable rear fin that is truly iconic. What the images also show is that Volkswagen will be working with the sport gull-wing doors, positioning it incredibly close to the aspirations of competitors such as Mercedes.
There is also an apparent dismissal for the conventional windscreen design, suggesting the integration of driverless technology. VW has previously confirmed that its first autonomous car should be expected in 2025.
Discussing the new patents Wired.co.uk explains:
‘These new images come on the back of the VW I.D. unveiled at the 2016 Paris auto show, a hatchback with an 168bhp electric motor and a 300-plus-mile range, due in 2020.
All of the electric models will be built on Volkswagen’s scalable EV platform, called MEB, sharing major components including motors, axles and suspension.’
