3D printing reached new technological limits in 2014 with most of the world fascinated by what a 3D printer could achieve. Having never seen anything quite like it we knew such tools would alter the world of manufacturing indefinitely.
Where we were thrown by 3D models printed of humans never did we think we would see the day a vehicle was created entirely from 3D printing technology.
Well, it seems that the day is finally here with Local Motors launching a world exclusive.
The company, founded in 2007, made history in September when it unveiled the world’s first printed car, a creation that has astounded both car lovers and the automotive industry.
It is said that this project aims to ‘speed up the manufacturing process’, relying on expert printers to craft bespoke vehicles as dictated by customer’s requests. With one car taking just 44 hours to make it is undeniable that this direct digital manufacturing is impressive, but is this just a novelty car?
In an interview with the company co founder it appears that this venture is to be taken very seriously, suggesting that his creation will give fellow manufacturers a run for their money.
How will this change vehicle purchasing?
Where we have been used to taking trips out on a Sunday to browse the showrooms for a new car you can now do it from the comfort of your own home. Not only can you purchase your 3D car online but you can also design it, decide when you want it printed and have it delivered directly to your door.
An interview with the technology giant:
So, what do you think, would you buy a 3D printed car?
