Mercedes confirms Formula E entry for 2019/20 season

Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed that it will be joining Audi and BMW on the Formula E grid. Reports have confirmed this entry in accordance to promote the upcoming ‘EQ’ electric cars.

This means that the car manufacturing company will ditch its activities in the DTM championships next year in Germany ahead of its assault on the all-electric single seater racing series.

However, this news doesn’t come as a surprise due to the firm being a potential entry last year. This was due to it signing an ‘option agreement’ in order to potentially enter the sport from next year onwards.

This means that the Formula E development of new electric powertrain technology will come alongside the championship-winning Formula One outfit. The EQ all-electric cars are the first that is set to appear when Mercedes begins racing in 2019.

Following the release of the first Mercedes EQ car two years from now, we do ultimately expect them to launch ten new EVs by 2025.

Explaining the move from a motorsport perspective, Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes Motorsport, added: “I am pleased that we were able to extend our entry option for one year to the 2019/20 season. This gives us time to properly understand the series and to prepare for our entry in the right way.”

Formula E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said: “Today is a great day as we welcome Mercedes to the Formula E family – adding to the increasing number of manufacturers joining the electric revolution.”

This is the third Formula E announcement from a German Manufacturer in weeks. Earlier this month Audi and BMW said they have plans of their own for Formula E entries, which means that all three German premium car makers are set to be in the sport by 2019.

Of course, they are set to go head to head with the likes of Renault, Jaguar and DS.

Mercedes Sprinter van spied during assessment

According to photographs which are being revealed over the internet, the Mk3 version of the popular Mercedes van is set to arrive next year. The photographs which have been snapped shows the model currently undergoing assessments by engineers.

It’s set to be the third-generation model to replace the ageing Mk2 Sprinter. Speculators have voiced that this new model is expected now due to the Mk2 having been released way back in 2006.

The pretty lengthy partnership with Volkswagen seen that the previous Mercedes Sprinter platforms had shred with the VW LT and Crafter panel vans. However, the two marques have taken a different turn and have now gone it alone for their newest models. The Sprinter and the Volkswagen Crafter are both their own vans.

The photographs which have been publicised show the Sprinter in flat-bed, dropsied, pick-up format. However, this won’t be the only version as there will be numerous body styles available. These could include a traditional panel van, a side-windowed crew van, a complete minibus version and a chassis cabin version.

Each version will be available with numerous wheelbase lengths, and tall roofs will be available too. This means that customers will be able to tailor their Sprinter for whichever task they wish.

A jacked up four-wheel-drive version may also be available with a crew cab fitted dropside. Also, a single cab version too.

Mercedes is still hiding the third-generation Sprinter’s new face, although it is easy to imagine an evolutionary design creeping in which could introduce even sleeker, revised headlights for the trademark grille.

Meanwhile, it is still way too early to speculate with regards to powertrains, although Mercedes could carry over some four and six-cylinder diesel power plants. These plants could improve fuel economy and refinement. Although we at Limo Broker speculate that the changes in the cabin will be a lot more noticeable.

This van is set to be fresh, with a redesign that will certainly please Mercedes buyers.

Lewis Hamilton urges Mercedes to match Ferrari’s race consistency

Formula One driver, Lewis Hamilton, has stated that he and his Mercedes team need to be more consistent in order to challenge Ferrari. This comes just before the British driver is due to take part in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

However, it seems the world champion is nervous as he nods that Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari still remain the front runners for the competition.

Hamilton, 32, said, “Consistency is the key to winning the championship,”

“Up until now, Sebastian has had the consistency of a winning championship, so we have to improve if we are going to have a shot at winning this title.”

Hamilton is trailing 12 points behind Vettel in the drivers’ championship, even though both have three wins apiece. It was obvious that he struggled in Monaco, due to failing to find the correct set up and balance for his car whilst having difficulty putting his tyres in their correct temperature-operating window.

However, he and the team addressed these problems which seen him go on to take fourth career grand slam of pole. This seen him in the lead for every lap of the race, and setting in the fastest lap in Montreal. This was the second time he’s done that this season, again, proving his dominance in the sport.

Mercedes are hopeful that they will be able to repeat this exceptional performance in Baku. However, Hamilton isn’t taking anything for granted. Whilst speaking about Ferrari he said, “They have had a more consistent season so far. We’ve had more of an up-and-down season. I think they still are favourites in terms of the fact their car seems to work everywhere. But I think there’s more unlocked potential in our car.”

The team have new regulations to stick to this season, and so teams are still working on the vehicles to better develop them. Additionally, Hamilton believes there is more to come, “I’m hoping by August, coming into September, by then we are the favourites,”

“I looked through what I went through last year here and know where all the pitfalls and the issues I had then and don’t plan on having the same issues this weekend,” he said. “But it’s a new year, a new day, I am sure there will be other scenarios this weekend. I feel 12 months later we are better prepared than we were then.”
