Is Christine Bleakley’s Daybreak role in trouble?
After hitting the headlines over the summer for switching channels from BBC to ITV, presenter Christine Bleakley finds herself back in the papers as her new early morning show continues to shed viewers.
The Northern Irish presenter who found fame on the BBC’s The One Show alongside Adrian Chiles is said to be “frustrated” at the plummeting viewing figures for her new show ITV show Daybreak.
Rumours are rife that the 31-year-old could lose her seat on the Daybreak sofa if the show doesn’t claw back viewers by Christmas. Recent viewing figures show that the ITV programme is lagging behind its rival, with Daybreak averaging 700,000 viewers this week, while the BBC’s Breakfast news show is achieving 1.4 million viewers.
Both Chiles and Bleakley were poached from the BBC, where they fronted the One Show together, in a joint pay deal rumoured to be worth £10 million. However if the ratings don’t improve, the Northern Irish presenter could find herself working on another ITV show such as the X-Factor.
If the current X-Factor presenter, Dermot O-Leary, decides to take on presenting duties for the US version of the hit show next year, insiders say Christine is favourite to take over the role in the UK.
The official word from ITV is that Christine’s Daybreak role is safe, and that the channel has no plans to replace either Christine or her co-presenter Adrian Chiles.
