Rolls Royce special edition sells out in 2 months

rolls-royce-year-of-the-dragon

The limited edition Rolls Royce Year of the Dragon Phantom has sold out in just two months.

The special edition Rolls Royce was priced at $1.2 million and created especially to commemorate the Chinese New Year of the Dragon, with the luxury Phantom proving to be a very popular choice amongst its Chinese customers despite its hefty price tag. The next year of the Dragon, according to the Chinese calendar, isn’t until 2024, which may have contributed to the rush on this particular special edition.

The top spec Phantom is sold in a unique shade of maroon and decorated with gold detailing including ornate dragons to tie in with the theme of the special edition. The vehicle has the option to be customised further to each individual customer’s requirements with personalised embroidery on the upholstery, drinks cabinets and even specialised picnic baskets.

According to the luxury car manufacturer, their range of highly bespoke vehicles are always strong sellers within the Chinese market as the car maker has found that the opportunity for personalisation is highly attractive to its customers in China.

While Rolls Royce predicts a successful year in 2012 with plans to open more dealerships in China to add to its current range of 14 showrooms in the country, the high end car manufacturer is unsure on whether they’ll be able to match the record breaking sales figures of 2011.

Mobility scooter transformed into Thunderbirds inspired Rolls Royce

thunderbirds-scooter

A grandfather from Worcestershire hit the headlines last week after he debuted his pimped up mobility scooter which he’d lovingly transformed into a Thunderbirds inspired Rolls Royce complete with a Lady Penelope lookalike doll.

Brian Vann from Evesham transformed his regular mobility scooter especially for a cancer charity race after his wife passed away following a battle with the illness back in 2010. The 74-year-old crafted the silver car from cardboard and foil, completing the iconic Rolls Royce look with his own Spirit of Ecstasy created from a Barbie doll and a life size doll in the passenger seat as his own Lady Penelope.

The retired construction worker said he got a picture of the original Thunderbirds car and worked from that to craft his own unique version of the much loved car. The granddad had some help from a couple of friends who made the Lady Penelope doll which rides alongside Mr Vann in the scooter.

The transformation for the 10mph scooter took its inspiration from the legendary 1960’s TV show, thunderbirds, with Mr Vann taking on the role of the chauffeur in his very own Rolls Royce style mobility scooter.

As well as crafting his own Thunderbirds car, the 74-year-old also created his own Batmobile earlier in the year which he spent several weeks making from scratch.

The vintage Rolls Royce limo was made to order for the Queen’s sister in 1975, but was later taken to the US when it was purchased by Donald Kerr who then sold the vehicle to the American actor, Burt Reynolds who owned the car for several year, but is thought to have never used it on the open road. In 1988 the limo was then bought by a British stock broker who brought the vehicle back to the UK.

Prince-William_Kate-Middleton

The car which will transport Kate Middleton to her wedding at Westminster Abbey on April 29th has been revealed as the Queen’s Rolls Royce Phantom. However the future princess will leave the ceremony with her new husband, Prince William, in a horse drawn carriage to symbolise her ascension from commoner to fully fledged member of the royal family.

It’s been reported that the £1 million Rolls Royce was chosen by Kate Middleton herself for its large windows so as to allow the onlookers a good view of the bride as she arrives at her wedding to Prince William.

The luxury limo was gifted to the Queen to mark her 1977 Silver Jubilee, and is the same car in which Charles and Camilla were travelling in when they were attacked by a mob during protests before Christmas. The Rolls Royce is currently undergoing repair work following the incident, however a spokesperson for the Palace confirmed that the car will be ready in time for the big day.

The newlyweds will travel from Westminster Abbey after the wedding ceremony to the reception at Buckingham Palace in a horse drawn carriage, the same carriage which transported Charles and Diana on their wedding day back in 1981. john-lennon-ferrari

John Lennon’s Ferrari, the first car he ever owned, is to go under the hammer at Bonhams auction house early next month.

The bright blue 1965 Ferrari GT 2 & 2 Coupe was the first car he bought after passing his test. Lennon purchased the sports car in the same year the Beatles released their hit singles Ticket to Ride and Help.

According to reports from the 60’s, a number of luxury car manufacturers descended on the Beatles member with offers of cars when the news got out that he’d passed his test. Despite the generous offers from several top name car brands, Lennon opted for the sleek Ferrari in an unusual shade of blue costing £2,000 in 1965.

Although the legendary singer owned the Ferrari for less than a year, the sports car is expected to fetch between £120,000 and £170,000.

The most famous car owned by John Lennon was the Rolls Royce Phantom V Limo decorated in psychedelic colours. The bright yellow limousine was painted by a friend of Lennon’s with flower and leaf patterns. Lennon bought the Phantom in 1965, the same year as the he passed his test and purchased the Ferrari. The Rolls Royce is currently on display at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, Canada.

The 1965 Ferrari is due to be sold at auction on February 4th at Bonhams, Paris.

Chance for classic car enthusiasts to pick up a gem as Austrian vintage car museum closes

One of the classic Rolls Royce limos on display at the musuem

A classic car collector in Austria who runs his own museum showcasing his prized possessions, has decided to shut up shop and his putting his superb collection up for auction.

The collection is a car lover’s paradise. Amongst the 180 strong fleet is a 1935 Rolls Royce Phantom which is up for sale, as is a 1955 Porsche 550 spyder.

Mr Karl Ritter who owns the museum in Stainz, Austria, said that although he still has a passion for classic cars, at the age of 70, running the museum has become something of a burden. He added that as the years pass by he’d rather “sit by a fire at home to standing in the museum at zero degrees centigrade day after day.”

The museum’s collection comprises of 180 classic cars in total, nearly all of which will be put up for sale as part of the auction. However Mr Ritter intends to keep back a handful of his favourites for his own private collection.

Only a few years ago, Mr Ritter gave up his assortment of 85 motorcycles. He admits to having had a fascination with motor vehicles from a very young age.

If you share Mr Ritter’s love of classic cars, take a look at the museum’s website for a complete rundown of the vehicles which are due to go under the hammer.
