Cameron Douglas seen here with his father Michael Douglas
Hollywood actor Michael Douglas was in court on Tuesday to support his son, Cameron, as he was handed a 5 year jail sentence for drug convictions.
Cameron Douglas was arrested last year after police raided his New York hotel room. There were allegations that he was planning to transport drugs from California to the city. The 31-year-old pleased guilty to the charges of dealing methamphetamine, and also possessing heroin after being taken into custody by police. He has spent the last 8 months on remand in a correctional centre awaiting trial.
The former DJ’s mother was also in court this week. Diandra Luker was married to Douglas between 1977-2000. Cameron spoke in court and firstly apologised to his family for the “nightmare” he had put them through. He also admitted that he is currently sober, the first time he has ever been in his adult life.
A number of family members including his father Michael Douglas, Stepmother Catherine Zeta Jones, and grandfather Kirk Douglas all sent hand written letters to the court on Cameron’s behalf.
In court Cameron spoke of his desire to lead a life free of drugs saying, “If I should be so fortunate as to have another chance, I will never squander that opportunity.” The judge noted that 31-year-old had been a drug user since the age of 13, but has been clean since entering the correctional centre in August last year.
