Prom limo wish comes true for Swindon youngsters

Prom limo found at the 11th hour to transport a group of school pupils from Swindon

A group of youngsters from Swindon have had their prayers answered after a new limo hire company has stepped forward to transport them to their prom after their original booking fell through.

The year 11 pupils from Greendom School were devastated after the owner of the limousine they had booked to take them to their school prom informed them that he’d had to sell the luxury vehicle because of “poor trading conditions.”

The former limo boss said he would pass their booking onto another company, however their limos were already fully booked for the popular prom date, and they could only offer the girls a luxury cars for the night, as opposed to the limousine they had dreamed of.

With demand for chauffeur driven limos far outweighing supply during the peak prom season, the school pupils hit a dead end when they attempted to find another operator to transport them to their school prom in style.

After calling every limo company in the area, as luck would have it, one firm came forward to help the girls out. Although they couldn’t take a booking for the prom night, they agreed to transport the girls to the prom free of charge, and to take them home again for a reduced fee.

The 8 school girls are now looking forward to arriving at their school prom in the lap of luxury thanks to the limo hire company in Swindon which came forward to save the day.

School Prom News: Welsh Council warns of underage drinking on school prom parties

Council warns about the threat of underage drinking at school proms

Council warns about the threat of underage drinking at school proms

A council in West Wales has warned licensed premises in the area to take a cautious approach when accepting bookings for school proms after a spate of problems related to underage drinking had been reported.

Behind the glamour of the school prom with its princess dresses and luxury limousines, lurks a more sinister problem; binge drinking is threatening to spoil the end-of-term party.

Carmarthenshire County Council issued the warning after two school proms held at a well known entertainment venue in the area resulted in the prom-goers binge drinking. Many of the youngsters were reported to have been drunk to the point of being incapable, and one reveller was taken to hospital with alcohol poisoning.

In a separate incident in the county, police were called to a school related celebration and a number of the party-goers were arrested.

The problem has lead to many establishments introducing an outright ban on school proms as they simply don’t want to take the risk. The council has warned those that are continuing to host school proms to ensure they have measures in place to prevent underage revellers from being served alcohol, and from consuming alcohol they may have smuggled into the venue.

Police have launched a series of test purchases in the county whereby underage individuals are sent into a pub or club and attempt to purchase alcohol. These tests will continue as the authorities work hard to stamp out the problem of underage drinking.

As the trend for the American style prom shows no signs of waning, licensed premises will need to come up with stricter measures if the end-of term celebration is to continue safely.

Hair dye disaster left Huddersfield girl in tears at school prom

Charlotte Gilchrist was 16 at the time of incident and about to attend her school prom when she suffered a severe allergic reaction to a hair dye at a local salon. Five years on, and now aged 21, Miss Gilchrist has been awarded £20,000 in compensation.

In April 2004 Miss Gilchrist was a pupil at Colne Valley High School in Huddersfield. In preparation for her school prom, she attended a hair salon to have her hair dyed especially for the occasion. However the trainee hairdresser failed to run a skin test on Miss Gilchrist to check she wasn’t allergic to any of the chemicals in the dye.

Within minutes of applying the dye to her hair, Miss Gilchrist began to feel a burning sensation and her head started to itch. The following day the pain was so bad, she had to leave school. Her face had become covered in blisters and she was unable to open her eyes for 5 days. After attending the hospital she was prescribed antihistamines.

Miss Gilchrist described the affect the reaction had, “I was scared. When I woke up the following day the right side of my face was swollen. There was a clear liquid coming out of my head, it was just awful.”

Despite her horrific injuries, the 16-year-old struggled to attend her school prom, but spent the whole evening in tears.

Miss Gilchrist has now been awarded a total of £20,000 in compensation. The hair salon owner has been ordered to pay her £18,000 legal costs, and £2,000 for damages.
