School prom dress plan for creative pupils in Staffordshire

School pupils in a Staffordshire high school have a budget busting plan up their sleeve to help beat the rising cost of attending their end of year school prom. Pupils at Maryhill High School studying product design are hoping to win funding in order to make their own prom dresses by recycling second hand clothes, showcasing their final prom dress designs in a full-blown catwalk show.

The cost of attending the school prom is a much-debated subject, with the final bill often running into hundreds of pounds once the price of the prom ticket, dress or suit, hair and make-up and limo hire all adding to the overall expense of the school prom experience.

One group of GCSE students are hoping to save on the expense of the all-important prom dress by scouring local charity shops to find second hand dresses and then use their creative skills to turn these old articles of clothing into unique stunning prom gowns, the local Staffordshire newspaper reports. The students have even contacted TV stylist, Gok Wan, to make him aware of their project and to ask for his top tips on creating winning designs out of second hand pieces.

The pupils have applied for funding from Class Act, a competition run by The Sentinel and sponsored by Barclays Money Skills, as the teenagers hope to win the £5,000 prize which they will use to buy sewing machines to create their designs, also to buy their materials and second hand clothes which they plan to revamp, and also for lighting and cameras for use in the final catwalk show.

Do you think the prom dress recycling project is a good idea? Would you consider creating your own prom dress using second hand items? Let us know your thoughts on prom dress recycling by posting your comments below.

gothic-limousines

A gothic style hearse limousine was hired last week to star alongside legendary rocker Alice Cooper as he took part in TV panel show, BBC2’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks. The 22foot limo, which is a converted funeral hearse, was used to film a spoof entrance as the singer made his arrival onto the show.

Tony Deluca is the owner of the gothic limo and accompanied the quirky ride during its trip to London for filming on the popular comedy show. According to the limo hire boss, Alice Cooper was impressed with the converted 1977 Cadillac hearse which features a state of the art sound system, black leather upholstery with gothic cross motifs, and skull wine glasses and a creepy ultra violet lighting system.

Speaking in an interview with his local newspaper, limo hire boss Tony Deluca from Pembrokeshire described legendary rocker, Alice Cooper, as a very normal and down-to-earth bloke who was very enjoyable and easy to work with. The band front man even agreed to give the hearse limo his official seal of approval, etching his signature on the leather upholstery with a message that now reads “Alice Cooper was here.”

As well as appearing in TV and films, the gothic limo is also available for private hire bookings and regularly travels throughout the UK to provide chauffeur driven transportation for special occasions including school proms, birthdays and even weddings.

Funeral limo rescues stranded prom goers

funeral-limo

A group of school girls were rescued by a funeral limo after the company they’d booked a luxury stretch limousine with to transport them to their school prom in Sunderland went bust.

Like most high school students, the seven girls who all attend Farringdon School began planning for their prom night months in advance, booking their limo hire at the first opportunity.

However their plans were thrown into disarray when one of the party received a phone call from their limousine hire company to inform them that the firm had ceased trading and would therefore be unable to provide them with a chauffeur driven limo come prom night.

With only a few weeks to go until the prom, all of the local luxury transport providers were fully booked and so it looked as though the girls’ dreams of arriving at their prom in the back of a chauffeur driven limo were over, that was until a local funeral directors heard about the limo-less prom girls and decided to offer their services.

Scollen and Wright Funeral Services offered the girls the use of their black funeral limo free of charge to ensure they had a night to remember.

The funeral directors were unsure if the 16-year-old girls would feel uneasy about travelling to their prom in a funeral car, however the prom goers were actually thrilled with their prom ride as it was something different and there was definitely no danger of any other pupils turning up in a funeral limo!

School proms set to be bigger than ever this year

prom-1

According to recent statistics, school proms are bigger than ever this year with hotels reporting a surge in bookings for prom events of 500% in some cases, and limo hire companies revealing they are having to turn away customers as the demand for luxury limos is more than most can cope with.

The prom season in the UK runs from the middle of June for four weeks until the middle of July, although some schools opt to have their end of year leaving events before and after these four weeks, this is when most are held. With 9 out of 10 schools in the Essex area throwing a school prom within the coming six weeks, the next month is going to be busy one for suppliers of prom services.

Research into prom spending habits has found that parents are forking out £415 on average for each child to go to their prom. This includes the outfit, be it a prom dress or a hired suit, hair and make up for the girls and also accessories such as shoes, handbags and jewellery, and also limo hire and party bus hire so the teens can arrive in style at the big event.

With American TV shows such as High School the Musical and Glee popularising the school prom further, end of year parties for younger children is now one of the biggest growing trends. Junior proms for children as young as 11 are fast becoming big business for limo hire providers and hotels as these youngsters want to emulate their favourite TV stars from the popular teen shows.

The UK’s leading limousine hire provider, Limo Broker, has reported a huge uptake in bookings for proms for the next four weeks. According to the national limo hire operator, July 1st is set to be the very busiest day of the year for prom limo bookings with every single pink limo within their fleet booked out for a school prom from 6pm on that date.

The phenomenon that is the school prom is gathering some serious momentum in Britain and with the news that younger and younger children are demanding end of year parties as well as the senior kids, prom fever is unlikely to slow down any time soon.

Teen banned from prom for posting invite on school wall

prom-message

A teenage boy from Connecticut has been banned from attending his school prom after he posted a giant invite on the walls of the school asking a girl to be his date.

James Tate scaled the school wall and attached 12 inch cardboard letters to spell out the message, “Sonali Rodrigues, will you go to the prom with me HMV (hit me up) – Tate.”

Although Sonali was bowled over by the romantic gesture when she arrived at school the next day to see the message, the teachers at Shelton High School saw the act very differently and took action to ban the teen from attending the prom.

The head teacher at the Connecticut High School branded the act a safety risk, and took action to punish the teen for attempting this dangerous act by not allowing him to attend the prom for which he’d just secured a date.

School pupil James Tate roped in a couple of friends to help him post the message on the school wall, with one helping to hold the ladder, while another fixed the double sided tape on the letters, while James attached the message to the wall. The high school student said he was careful to not put himself or his friends in danger while posting the message, saying he even wore a protective helmet in case of any accidents.

Despite his pleas, the high school is standing firm and refusing to let James Tate, and his accomplices, attend the senior prom.

The protests have already started, with a Facebook group calling for the ban to be lifted on James attendance at the prom attracting 5,000 likes.

Teens warned against using sun beds ahead of the school prom season

tan-lines-prom

Teenage girls are being strongly advised against heading to the sun bed ahead of their school prom because of the links between UV exposure and skin cancer.

Following the Sun beds regulation Act 2010, it’s now illegal from under 18’s to use a sun bed. However some tanning salons have reported receiving request from the mother’s of teenagers who have pleaded to let their sons, and daughters in particular, use the sun bed.

An upcoming school prom is one of the most popular reasons youngsters are turning to sun beds, with many wanting to achieve glowing sun kissed skin for the big night. Others use the sun bed to help alleviate the symptoms of acne before prom night as some believe the UV light helps dry the oil which causes the spots in skin.

Medical experts believe the risk of skin cancer in young people is increased considerably with the use of sun beds with statistics showing that more than 2 under 35 year olds are diagnosed with skin cancer every day.

However some sun bed advisers believe sun bed use is fine in moderation and recommend youngsters get advice on their skin type before using a sun bed.

If you’re preparing for your school prom or school leavers ball, you’d be well advised to hit the fake tan as opposed to the sun bed to ensure you stay safe and look great for prom night.
