Car hire firm to introduce solar power at US outlets

Car hire giant, Hertz, have unveiled plans to introduce solar power at 16 of its outlets across the US including key locations in California and New York.

The announcement to roll out solar power at a number of Hertz rental centres follows a successful pilot scheme at the car rental company’s Denver Airport outlet. Hertz estimate that the solar panels at their Denver centre alone will offset 650,000 pounds of CO2 emissions every year, so the off-setting potential for 16 outlets across America is huge.

The process of introducing solar panels at Hertz car hire outlets involves fitting Photovoltaic panels to the roofs of these centres, providing on average, 2.3 mw of energy. Hertz hopes to have the 16 outlets, complete with their new solar panels, up and running by the end of the year.

This is just another example of Hertz’s commitment to greener energy as the company has always already introduced a number of electric powered vehicles to its rental fleets, including the ultra green Nissan Leaf, and the Chevrolet Volt.

One of the heads of Hertz car hire in the US say the company “leads the industry in sustainable practices” and the introduction of solar panels is just another way in which the company is striving to offer environmentally friendly practices.

Eco friendly car hire coming to German city

hamburg

Car2go is due to launch its eco-friendly car hire service in Hamburg as part of the company’s European expansion plans.

Car hire firm, Europcar, will be introducing the fleet of green smart cars to the rental market in Hamburg by early next year. Europcar owns a 75% share of Daimler’s Car2go.

The eco ride was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year. The new vehicle features a solar panelled roof which charges the battery and helps run the car’s telematics system while it’s on the move and stationary which in turn, helps reduce the car’s carbon emissions. Also, if the vehicle is left parked in the sun, the solar panel will work to cool the car down by as much as 18 degrees Celsius.

The green Smart car will be available to hire from next year in the German city of Hamburg with rates starting from just €14.90 per hour. This price includes fuel, mileage covered during the hire period, and is also inclusive of insurance and taxes. Plus, car hire customers will be able to park for free in designated Car2go spaces dotted around the city.

A fleet of 300 Smart Cars will be introduced by Europcar and will be available to hire from car rental firm’s base in Hamburg.

Car Hire Company joins forces with Renault to offer green transport package

Car hire company strikes deal with Renault

One of the leading providers of car hire, Europcar, has revealed it will join forces with Renault in a bid to provide a comprehensive green car hire package. Renault’s new range of electric cars will be incorporated into Europcar’s fleet and the car hire firm has plans to create a network of re-fuelling points for the electric powered vehicles as part of its environmentally friendly car hire strategy.

The two companies will sign the agreement at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. Europcar’s decision to stock Renault’s electric car and provide re-charging services will add another form of revenue to the company. Other car hire companies have attempted to do the same thing with regular cars as they allow customers to return their vehicle empty and charge for the cost of the fuel, this allows them to squeeze more money out of the one transaction.

Another company to spot the earning potential of providing an electric re-charge service for these green cars is McDonalds. The North Carolina restaurant of the fast food chain opened up an electric charging service in July of this year.

With more and more emphasis being out upon reducing our carbon footprint and with the increase in the range of car manufacturers making these green vehicles, Europcar’s move to offer a re-fuelling service is particularly shrewd. It also offers perfect opportunity for cross selling products to its car hire customers meaning they should be able to profit from the venture easy.

Renault plans to put the car into production in 2011 with the first vehicle being available to buy from 2012.
