A national tabloid newspaper has this week revealed the government department with the biggest bill for chauffeur driven limousine, and also the largest fleet, during Labour’s final year in government.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, headed up by Peter Mandelson, has been revealed as the biggest spender in the chauffeur driven limo stakes. The spending figures were made public this week and showed that Mandelson’s department ran up a bill of £700,000 for chauffeur driven cars during Labour’s last year in power.

The figures relate to the period between April 2009 and March 2010 and showed that the BIS department was the biggest spending department within the labour government at the time. The Home Office was runner up, coming in with a bill of £500,000 for the cost of chauffeur driven transport for ministers and officials, £200,000 less than Mandelson’s department’s bill.

As well as running up the biggest bill for chauffeur driven transport, the BIS department also boasted the largest fleet of vehicles, with 7 top quality cars at their disposal.

The cost of the cars and drivers used by government ministers and officials while on business is picked up by the taxpayer. In total, this service cost the taxpayer £6.7 million during this period, according to the figures released this week.

Chauffeur driven limo takes Transport Minister on 1 mile journey to work

A chauffeur driven Toyota Avensis was used to take the Transport Minister on a mile trip into work

Despite the new Prime Minister’s pledge to get ministers out of the limo and onto the tube, it has been reported that the Transport Minister Philip Hammond used an official government limo to travel the 1 mile journey to work last week.

Reports say a chauffeur driven Toyota Avensis waited outside the minister’s £2 million house for almost 30 minutes before Phillip Hammond emerged and was taken on the 1 mile journey from his home, to his offices in Westminster.

Sloane Street Tube Station is just a few minutes walk from the Government minister’s house, plus there are numerous bus stops in the vicinity as well, but instead of utilising public transport, Mr Hammond made the short trip to work in a chauffeur driven car.

The Transport Minister is said to have called upon the services of the chauffeured government limo for a second time on the same day last week. Despite the fact that it would take just 3 minutes to walk from the House of Commons to Department of Transport HQ, Mr Hammond chose to make the journey in the limo.

Labour MPs have been quick to criticise the Tories, calling David Cameron’s vow to cut down on unnecessary use of official cars as a “hollow promise.”

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport has defended Mr Hammond’s actions saying the minister only uses a government car “when his diary dictates to ensure he fulfils his duties in the most efficient way possible.” The spokesperson added that the Transport Minister had only used the chauffeur driven car on one occasion during the whole of last week.

More details have emerged regarding the cost of Labour and Plaid Cymru’s chauffeur driven limos. During the course of 2008/09 the Labour-Plaid Cymru administration racked up a bill of £216,461 for chauffeur’s wages. When travelling across the country to attend official engagements the AM’s are given the use of a government limo and chauffeur however many are calling for a reduction of this kind of travel.

Opposition leaders are up in arms as the figure shows a significant increase on the previous period of 2007/08 when the total cost of this luxury transport stood at £144,190. This over reliance on chauffeur driven transport for Welsh ministers has lead Welsh Conservative Leader Nick Bourne to speak out. He suggests the AM’s are guilty of hypocrisy as these same ministers have been encouraging the general public to give up their own vehicles and make use of public transport in order to reduce co2 emissions. Mr Bourne summed up his point by saying: “Not only are Labour and Plaid ministers driving more, they’re paying more for the pleasure.”

Another alarming discovery which was uncovered following the release of the recent figures is that, as Mr Bourne said, Ministers are in fact travelling more. In 2008 they clocked up 214,376 miles which shows a 50% increase in the amount travelled the previous year.

In a previous article on Limo Broker News we reported that the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Kirsty Williams, had suggested ministers utilise the use of video conferencing in order to reduce the amount of travel required to attend meetings across the country. This is a viable option and one which ministers are considering in order to lower transport costs.

Government spending has come under incredible scrutiny following the MP expense claim scandal revealed in the Telegraph earlier this year. Potentially, government officials may have to wave goodbye to their chauffeur driven limos if they are restore public confidence.
