Recent figures showed that 8 million of us in the U.K access the internet from our mobiles, that’s up a massive 42% on last year. With this in mind, Europcar decided to launch the new website to provide a service for those users.

It will be especially handy for those customers who are already away from home and need to find their closest car hire outlet. By typing in your required location you’ll be able to find a list of car hire bases in the area.

All booking confirmations and other information will be sent directly to your mobile via text or email. As an added incentive, Europcar are offering a 10% for those who book using the mobile service up until the end of November 2009.

Jobs lost as the Belfast branch of Ireland’s oldest Car Hire Company goes bust

19 workers from Belfast are facing redundancy after Car Hire Firm, Pembroke Services, went into liquidation last week. The company is part of the Irish Murray Group which is run by a father and son team from Co. Dublin, and is said to have run up debts which amount to £1.3 million.

The company suffered a major blow after it lost its franchise with car hire giant Europcar. Workers from the Belfast based company said they were first alerted to the possibility of job cuts in July but were left hanging for over a month until they received a letter from the administrators. The employees are extremely unhappy with the treatment they have received, one spoke out about the situation explaining how they “were given no pay, holiday pay, pay in lieu or redundancy, or P45s.”

Out of the £1.3 million debt the majority, which is estimated at £1.25 million, is said to be owed to ordinary creditors whilst £50,000 is left owing to the bank and £15,000 makes up the money owed to employees. Although the company is said to have over £400,000 worth of assets, the administrators revealed that only 25% of that can be released.

Although the Southern arm of the car hire company is still trading, they too are facing desperate times with job cuts expected all through the business. Several members from the liquidation team, Grant Thornton, have been drafted in to assist the firm in the hope that they will be able to work themselves out of danger.

Car hire customers suffer as a result of staff shortages

An article in The Guardian newspaper as uncovered a hidden problem behind car hire charges. Customers of Europcar have expressed anger at having their credit cards charged for alleged damage to a hire car after returning the vehicle in pristine condition, the reason seems to be due to staff shortages.

One case highlighted in the article is that of Kate Colledge who hired a car from Manchester Airport. She returned the car 10 minutes before the deadline but when she went to the car hire counter to return the keys, she was told that there were no staff available to check the car. Ms Colledge had to leave the keys in an envelope at the office and wait for her invoice to arrive by post.

However upon checking her credit card statement, Ms Colledge discovered she had been charged £208 without consultation by the car hire company. After much persistence and correspondence via email and phone it transpired that the car hadn’t been checked until 17 hours after she had returned it and the customer had been charged the fee due to damage to the vehicle. Ms. Colledge was informed by the company that “customers are liable for vehicles until they have been checked in by staff regardless of when that is” she added “if I’d wanted the car to be checked by someone I would have had to have stayed with it for 17 hours after the agreed time of return.”

After the newspaper probed the issue further, the car hire company conceded that their staff can be forced to spread themselves thinly due to the busy nature of the airport. They have however withdrawn the damage charges due to the time lag between the car being returned and the inspection taking place.

To prevent other car hire customer suffering a similar fate The British Vehicle Leasing and Rental Association recommend these steps be taken: customers should try to return the vehicle during office hours, if there are no staff to check the vehicle make a note of the mileage, fuel level and for extra evidence take photographs.

Fiat prides itself on providing cars with low carbon emissions and its latest models have been designed with this firmly in mind. The new 500 Pop’s road tax is only £35 a year which reflects the low impact the vehicle has on the environment, plus it can be driven into the London congestion zone free of charge thanks to its low carbon emissions.

Europcar has been instrumental in implementing greener travel into the car hire industry. In 2008 they were the first European Car Hire company to be awarded the Green Charter in recognition of its efforts to lower the carbon emissions of its hire vehicles.

As well as offering customers the pick of a wide selection of eco-friendly cars, Europcar’s website also enables customers to check the co2 emissions of each car within its fleet helping them to make an informed decision on their choice of car hire.

Europcar’s move towards greener car hire services is an extremely shrewd one given the attention currently being paid to our carbon footprint. Plus the new fleet of eco-friendly cars from Fiat is sure to entice a whole new market of car hire customers through the doors.

Car Hire Company launches new pay-as-you-go scheme

Job likely to face the axe at vehicle rental call centre in Bathnew pay-as-you-go scheme for car hire company

The U.K’s biggest car hire company, Europcar, has launched a new pay-as-you-go system for both van and car hire to entice more business customers. In this time of economic uncertainty small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) are becoming increasingly reluctant to commit themselves to long term contracts; this new system hopes to go some way to resolving this issue.

The Managing Director of Europcar, Catriona Lougher, explained the new scheme in detail: “With the future looking so uncertain, pay as you go car and van hire makes a lot of sense enabling businesses to respond quickly to opportunities without being tied into longer term contracts. Crucially we have removed potential barriers such as credit checks and improved access to vehicles with free delivery and collection for less frequent customers to make car and van hire much more convenient.”

Europcar is certainly pulling out all the stops in a bid to attract new business customers. They are offering free delivery within a 10 mile radius of a depot on any vehicle ordered. As an added incentive, companies can pre-pay for their van or car hire and receive a lower rate than paying on delivery.

SME’s are also offered a fixed 15% reduction off standard rates regardless of how frequently or infrequently they require car hire. Alternatively, if you require vehicle hire on a regular basis, Europcar offers SME’s the opportunity to open a Business Account which will guarantee these customers a special fixed rate.

Europcar hopes that by working alongside businesses they can create tailor made, cost effective car hire packages which cater to individual company needs. This flexible approach to car hire is sure to open up a wide range of opportunities and may prompt other car hire firms to re-think their business customer’s needs.

Car Hire Company’s new credit crunch busting delivery scheme

Car hire has hit a high all over Europe this summer despite the recession. Europcar, the car hire giant, has been thinking outside the box in a bid to cut down on the amount of travelling undertaken by their professional drivers when delivering and collecting vehicles.

Much of Europcar’s business comes from contracts with other companies, this involves vehicles being delivered to specific addresses all over the U.K. The scale of this cannot be underestimated as Europcar’s Operations Manager explained “We drive 13.5 million miles a year just delivering and collecting cars,” adding “Logistically, it’s a tall order.”

One of Europcar’s biggest U.K nerve centres can be found in the heart of Slough. Here the mechanics behind this large operation can be seen in action. The company has its distribution and valet service down to a fine art. The slick operation involves just one person who fully valets the vehicle before delivering it to its chosen destination. Upon arrival, the driver removes a collapsible motorcycle from the boot of the hire car and makes his return to the depot. The company also has a range of motorised bikes used for shorter journeys.

This one-man operation enables the car hire company to work effectively and keep costs low, plus they’re also doing their bit to keep co2 emissions down by utilising this green way of travel.
