Rowan Atkinson auctioned off as chauffeur for charity

Comedian and actor Rowan Atkinson has offered to donate his services as a chauffeur along with one of his prized vehicles, a Rolls Royce, as part of a charity auction organised by the newspaper, The Evening Standard, for deprived children.

However the funny man was spotted in Central London earlier this month on the side of the road awaiting the assistance of a break down recovery tow truck. The 54-year-old had been about to attend a private engagement at Asprey’s with his wife Sunetra when his vintage 1952 Jaguar burst into flames. It is reported that the engine caught fire. Despite the assistance from the RAC, the classic car had to be towed home.

The successful bidders at the auction need not worry as Atkinson as has promised there will be no “Mr Bean moments” when he takes on his chauffeur duties. The character of Mr Bean is one of Atkinson’s most famous comedy creations, gaining massive popularity in the 90’s with a TV series and also a film dedicated to the hapless Mr Bean.

A whole host of celebrities put forward their services as part of the charity auction. Readers of the Standard had the chance to bid for lots including a pint with film maker, Guy Ritchie, an art lesson with Tracey Emin and a chance to have your photograph taken with James Bond Himself, Daniel Craig.

Limo owners in Calgary launch petition against stringent parking rules

Limo owners from Calgary in Canada have got so fed up with being issued with parking fines whilst trying to drop off customers in the city, that they are launching a petition in order to get the rules changed.

One of the limo owners, Mengistu Birhanu, has received no less than 5 fines within the past few months as he was dropping off passengers in his limo at their chosen destinations. He is complaining that the stringent parking rules in operation in Calgary are impinging upon his limo hire business.

Parking rules in Calgary state that only taxis can park in taxi stands to drop off fares, but limos are not allowed. To overcome this problem, limo chauffeurs started using loading zones to park in whilst their passengers disembarked, however this is now being blocked as the parking rules state that these zones are not for use by taxis, commercial vehicles or couriers.

The parking authority now has new mobile vans with cameras in operation monitoring parking zones. Limo drivers have reported being photographed by these traffic officers after stopping for just a matter of minutes to allow a passenger to leave their limo.

The limousine drivers are now at a loss over where to park in order to allow their passengers to leave the vehicle safely, and yet for them to be within the parking laws.

Now limo owners have decided enough is enough and have got to together to create a petition to lobby the taxi commission to gain their backing in their battle against the parking authority.

Coach Company bosses stripped of licences after involvement with rogue limo operator

The two owners of a Walsall-based coach company have been stripped of their licences after they were found to have helped a rogue limo boss continue operating.

Fazal Hussain and Mohammed Arshad jointly ran Manor Buses and Coaches. They were found to have leant their operator licences to Darryl Williams of Red Hot Rescue limo hire company. Mr Williams was taken to court this year and banned from operating after an undercover investigation discovered he was using unsafe and unlicensed vehicles to provide a limo hire service in the Wolverhampton area.

Following the court proceedings, limo boss Mr Williams was ordered to pay £9,000 for a catalogue of safety and licensing breaches. He was found to have been operating without the correct licence for 3 years, and one of his limos didn’t have the correct MOT, amongst others problems.

During the investigation into Red Hot Rescue, the involvement of the coach bosses was uncovered. The coach company were found to have loaned their operator discs to Mr Williams.

Companies with multiple discs are permitted to loan their licences. However they cannot be loaned for longer than 14 days, and the person borrowing the disc must hold an operator’s license. Both of these conditions were breached.

Mr Hussain, who was known to have had a close relationship with Mr Williams, was banned from holding or applying for an operator’s licence for 18 months. Mr Arshad was already found to have lost his repute as a transport manager and no further order was made for him.

X-Factor winner Joe McElderry beaten to the Christmas number one spot by Rage Against the Machine

Joe loses out on Christmas number one

X-Factor winner Joe McElderry failed to reach the Christmas number one spot with his debut release, The Climb, after US band Rage Against the Machine beat him to it with their single Killing In The Name accompanied by a cleverly fought internet campaign.

Despite not clinching the Christmas number one like every other X-Factor winner before him, Joe remained upbeat about the whole experience saying, “I’m just happy I’ve got a single out.”

The metal rockers re-released their 1992 hit single to rival the winner of the ITV show in the charts. Rage Against the Machine outsold Geordie Joe by shifting 500,000 copies of their track in one week, compared to the 450,000 record sales racked up by the 18 year old.

Rage Against the Machine made history this week as their single was only available to download making it the first release to achieve a Christmas number one on downloads alone. They also chalked up the biggest selling single on the UK download chart ever.

Joe took defeat in his stride and said how much he enjoyed being part of a “much-hyped campaign” and congratulated the team behind Rage Against the Machine’s Facebook campaign that helped them achieve the number one. Simon Cowell however, went one step further and offered the people behind the campaign a job at his record label as he was so impressed by their skilful PR work, not surprisingly they declined the offer.

Norfolk farmer opts for tractor instead of limo on his wedding day

For farmer Charlie Clarke from Norfolk, there was only ever one vehicle he wanted to take him to the church on his wedding day. A stretch limo, Rolls Royce and Bentley were all ruled out as this farmer opted for something a little closer to his heart; a top of the range New Holland tractor.

The tractor mad farmer said he “couldn’t think of anything more stylish than this beautiful gleaming machine” as the perfect wedding vehicle on the big day. He added that in his eyes, the £67,000 tractor was definitely “more exciting than a limousine.”

No suited chauffeur was required on the day as Charlie as more than happy to drive himself to the ceremony on the giant tractor decorated in blue ribbons especially for the occasion.

Luckily Charlie’s wife-to-be, Louise Scott, is every accepting of her new husband’s tractor obsession. The bride even hopped onboard the tractor after the ceremony to pose for the official wedding photographs. The new Mrs Clarke said, “It’s brilliant. It was a real ambition of his to arrive in one of these.”

Ernest Doe and Sons who specialise in the sales and service of agricultural machinery kindly loaned the vehicle to the newly weds for the special day.
