Ashes kicks off in Cardiff

The most eagerly-anticipated sporting event of the summer gets underway at Cardiff from Wednesday, July 8th – England face Australia in The Ashes.

Andrew Strauss’ men will attempt to win back the trophy they meekly surrendered Down Under in 2007, with Australia, led by Ricky Ponting, seemingly in the ascendency after having scored a recent series win in South Africa.

Glamorgan’s newly-built Swalec Stadium was chosen ahead of traditional venues Old Trafford and Trent Bridge to host the first Test, giving Welsh cricket followers the chance to get behind the team which represents the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The £10 million venue will be something of an unknown quantity for both sides, but finance and operations director at Glamorgan, Alan Hamer, recently told the South Wales Echo that the new ground is set to impress.

He said: “We are all geared to go now. Before the Ashes we’ve got some major games involving Glamorgan at the stadium so we are working very hard.

“The pitch is looking good, the drainage is working well and the last few sections of the stands are coming along well.”

Blur are back for London gig

Brit poppers Blur are reuniting for a gig in London’s Hyde Park this summer.

The 1990s legends who beat Oasis to number one in 1995 with Country House have arranged a show in the capital’s most famous green space, playing on both Thursday, July 2nd and Friday, July 3rd.

Before heading off to festivals in Scotland and Ireland, singer Damon Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree will play to thousands of Londoners.

An excited Albarn told the NME that “it just felt it was right again. It somehow feels like there’s something for us to do again, we’re not completely useless or pointless, we’ve got a reason to exist”.

Speaking to the same publication, Coxon said: “For the benefit of the fans and those interested we can say that something’s on the cards.”

Joker Jimmy Carr in Oldham

One of the most quick-witted comedians in the business is coming to Oldham on Sunday, May 31st.

Jimmy Carr will be firing out several one-liners a minute at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of his Joke Technician Tour.

After attracting the attention of the UK’s comedy fans through several TV appearances, such as on Have I Got News For You, Carr released popular stand-up DVD Jimmy Carr live in 2004.

Reviews of the show have confirmed that Carr has retained the dark humour with which he provokes laughter about even the most taboo topics.

According to the Southport Observer: “Boundaries have not just been stretched but snapped through by the likes of Jimmy Carr, the man ‘without a moral compass’.

“Even despite seeing Britain’s most caustic comedian before, he still has the ability to shock – and make the audience laugh hysterically.”

Top athletes come to capital

Jonathan Ross is planning to make a big entrance at this year’s Bafta Awards in London.

The TV funnyman, who is nominated in the Best Entertainment Performance category, hopes to make the evening a night to remember.

Speaking to the Mirror about the upcoming ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall, he said: “I’ve suggested to Harry Hill we arrive in a Cinderella coach with our fellow Bafta nominees and he’s in agreement.”

This year will be the first that members of the public will be able to attend the ceremony, with tickets already on sale.
